Movement Digest – April 17, 2022

Due to some personal challenges that I am having at the moment, I have been reading a bit of stoic philosophy lately. And before you ask, no, being a stoic is not all about keeping a stiff upper lip. It is actually very similar to my beloved Cognitive Behaviour Theory.

Reading about the stoics led me to this quote (that has been attributed to Socrates) which I would like to share with you:

“No person has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. it is a shame for one to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which their body is capable.”

I am always a fan of focusing on our own personal capabilities and making incremental improvements in them each day. So much more meaningful and motivational than some external competition or simply focussing on physical appearance alone. Don’t you think?

That Socrates was a pretty smart guy, eh?

Second Wind Fitness – The Three Distinct Versions of Exercise
3 Types of exercise

The word exercise has many meanings. So many meanings that it has almost lost all of its meaning. I believe we would have a lot less fitness confusion and a more clear view of how to actually get fit if we broke it into three more distinct versions and assigned them some more meaningful names.

Change Academy – we are taking a bit of a spring break from the podcast right now so there are no new episodes… but may I encourage you to check out a past episode instead? Perhaps this interview I did with Dr. Nicole Byers about how we can use stress to our advantage?

No Weights Shoulder Mobility and Strength

Here is a set of movements you can do back to back to give you not only a good shoulder workout but also increase (or maintain) your shoulder mobility.

As much as possible move through this sequence with as little rest between sets as you can. The less resting you do, the more it will function as a strength workout.

That being said, if you find yourself compromising the movements or getting hunched over, shruggy or otherwise showing signs of poor alignment or bad posture, take a break and shake it out!
