Movement Digest – Jan 23, 2022

I have some exciting personal news – I have officialy joined the team at Nutritious Movement!

If you don’t know that name, you may know the name Katy Bowman (I reference her biomechanic work a LOT). After years of doing things like editing her podcast, preparing her audio books, and nerding out with her at the beach, I have officially joined her team as a (what I am calling) Movement Evagelist!

For those of you who don’t know…

Nutritious Movement recognizes that not only do we need to move our whole bodies more; we also need to move our individual body parts more. We combine big-picture education on biomechanics, kinesiology, physiology, and natural movement; and also simple, basic exercises to wake up all your trillion body parts. With lifestyle tips and community-building initiatives, Nutritious Movement helps you build a supportive movement community and create a more natural habitat in a modern context.

Simply put, we help you move more parts of you more often and more effectively.

Sounds like a good fit for me, doesn’t it? Hell yeah!

Second Wind Fitness – Why I Swim in Cold Water
When I posted that I was swimming in cold water on Social Media, I immediately started getting questions about why I would do this. Was it for longevity? To defeat chronic inflammation? To lose weight? To boost my immune system? And you know what, people seemed upset when I replied: “I just like it.”

Second Wind Fitness – How to use Yoga for Athletic Performance
My guest, Abi Carver, is the founder of and head instructor at Yoga 15, a two-time 200-Hour Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga Teacher, and a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer. So yeah, she knows a thing or two about how the body moves. Which makes her the perfect person to explain how we can use yoga to support our fitness endeavours.

Change Academy – 50K Tuneup: Navigation System
In part 2 of our 50,000 Mile Tune up series, we’re inviting you to investigate and clarify your values and determine what’s most important to you now. What sort of person do you want to be? What kind of life do you want to live?

Happy Brain – Stay Fit with Movement Snacks
I had a great time chatting (well ok, grandstanding) on Heather Parady’s show called Happy Brain. I came on the show to talk about how taking small breaks during the day can make you more productiive, more focussed, smarter and even happier – but we got into a lot more.

Laundry Day Workout

In this video, I demonstrate that by applying my 4 criteria of exercise to doing something like laundry, you can turn it into an effective workout.

The criteria are:

  1. Challenge your muscles (a little or a lot)
  2. Raise your heart rate (a little or a lot)
  3. Tease your balance, mobility and coordination
  4. Do this consistently (not just once a week or once a month)

You can imagine that these same criteria can be applied to any movement or housework (not just laundry) so get creative!
